How to Look 10 Years Younger Without Spending a Fortune on Beauty Products

If you’re anything like me you can get depressed and a little angry at the plethora of twenty-somethings, airbrushed to within an inch of their lives, that are draped over the covers of glossy magazines and touted as the latest ideal look.  Where is the reality?!? How dare huge multinational companies exploit not only these young women, but also our own insecurities and fears, to sell their latest overpriced wondercream, that will never in a million years, make us all look like that?!?

Here at Bali Lifestyle and Fitness Retreats we believe passionately that we are all beautiful in our own way, whatever our shape and size.  One of the things we find most inspiring, is teaching women how to love themselves, exactly as they are.   Marilyn Monroe said “A smile is the best makeup a girl can wear” and she was absolutely right.  When we are happy and content, we glow from within and that’s when we look beautiful, not matter what we wear or how old we are.

Part of loving ourselves is taking responsibility for looking after ourselves.  A good friend of mine says “I’ve learnt I am a very high maintenance woman, and the only person who can maintain me properly is me”, this is such a beautiful, self supporting approach to life!  When we nurture ourselves we can keep our tummies happy, our hormones balanced, our muscles stretched and supple, our skin fresh and glowing, our emotions positive and uplifted.  All of this combines to make us look young and beautiful.  And none of it costs a fortune.

Here are our top 10 tips for How to Look Younger and Glow from Within:

1  Focus on Good Fats

Good fats are Omega 3 and Omega 6.  For so many years we’ve all been scared off consuming fats by the media and well-intentioned, misinformation.  Here’s the fact:  our body needs fats to operate.  All our hormones are built on good fats, they help us look younger by reducing inflammation, and help our enzymes work more efficiently to pull fat out of storage and use it as energy.  You find these type of good fats in fatty fish, such as salmon & mackerel, nuts like walnuts & cashews and seeds, such as pumpkin & sunflower & sesame seeds

2  Remember to drink Water

Ideally, our bodies are made up of about 60% water.  Staying hydrating will keep cells at optimum plumpness and can help to reduce visible signs of aging.  It’s important to ensure that the water you drink works to alkalise your body, since being in an alkaline state helps to remove toxins more efficiently and improves blood flow to the skin, thus promoting a glowing, youthful look.  Add a few drops of fermented apple cider vinegar or fresh lime or lemon juice to each glass of water you drink for optimum alkalisation.

3  Juicing

Without spending big bucks on supplements we can get all the nutrients we need from fresh food, mainly vegetables, but it’s a challenge for most of us to eat the couple kilos of veggies we would need to consume in order to achieve this on a daily basis.  This is where juicing can be invaluable.  Because it removes the fibre from the fruit and vegetables, the juice is easy for our stomachs to digest, thus making absorption of vitamins and minerals quicker and more efficient. Juicing also helps to flush away toxins.  If we are able to concentrate our juicing on green leafy vegetables which are high in anti aging magnesium, manganese, potassium, iron, vitamin C, A & B – even better!  Beetroot & carrot are also excellent juicing choices for those beautiful Riboflavins which maintain body tissues but bear in mind they are quite high in sugars so, as always, balance is key!

4  Explore Superfoods

Some of our favourite Superfoods are:

Avocados – high in potassium and essential fatty acids, they also have the capacity to lower cholesterol

Dragonfruit – the little black seeds are full of omega 3 & 6, the red flesh is high in riboflavins and they are packed with potassium & magnesium

Goji – 500 times the Vitamin C of an orange and the most abundant source of carotenoids on earth.  The goji berry also stimulates the release of human growth hormone which boosts our metabolism, improves our ability to sleep, lowers fat levels and makes us look younger.

5  Have Fun with Fermented Foods

One of the keys to emotional and physical wellbeing is a happy tummy and probiotics are a super important part of this.  Fermented foods are the best way to get probiotics into your system.  Having good levels of good bacteria in your gut can help to prevent wrinkles by eliminating toxins and free radicals that can damage skin and lead to visible signs of aging.  Excellent fermented sources of probiotics include Kimchi, Unsweetened Yoghurt & Kombucha.

6  Fill up on Fibre

For excellent digestive health probiotics need prebiotics to feed on.  These are basically foods that are high in fibre, like green leafy vegetables, chickpeas, asparagus, bananas, any member of the allium family. Foods that are high in fibre will also take longer to digest thus helping you to feel full for longer and reducing food cravings, which can help you to maintain a healthy weight.

7  Use Yoga to move your body

Yogic breathing has been shown to oxygenate our cells, ridding them of toxins, helping prevent illness, and making skin radiant.  It also confers on practitioners the benefit of better posture, better mood, less stress and greater flexibility.  Yoga is one of the few forms of exercise that is designed to work the inner body as well as the outer, yoga poses help to revitalise the digestive system, the reproductive system and the immune system, all of which combines to make those who regularly practice this ancient art look and feel great!

8  Meditation

Inevitably stress and toxins form a big part of our lives, in Western society in particular.  High levels of stress result in over production of the stress hormone Cortisol, which can lead to increased appetite and food cravings, and lower levels of the hormone Testosterone, at optimum levels Testosterone works in both men and women to give them good energy, supple skin tone, glowing skin and hair.  One of the biggest stress busting gifts you can give yourself is to find time each day for some simple meditation and breathing, just 5-10 minutes each morning will set you up for a less stressful, more enjoyable day, and remember, the better and happier you feel, the more you will glow from within.

9  Coconut Oil body scrub

Much as we love lathering up with beautifully scented bath and shower gels, the truth is that most of these are dehydrating for our skin, depleting it of natural oils and making it look dry and potentially wrinkly and old.  One of our favourite body products that works to clean, exfoliate, smells great and helps us to look awesome is a body scrub based on organic cold pressed coconut oil.  You can make your own by combining Himalayan salt with coconut oil and a few drops of your favourite essential oil.  Rub on handfuls then shower off with warm or cold water – not hot as hot water accelerates dehydration!

10  Sleep

There is so much to do each day that it is shockingly easy to skimp on sleep!  Making sure you get eight hours solid rest a day means your body has a chance to flush out toxins, heal cell and tissue damage, balance hormones & optimise your digestion.  Getting enough sleep costs literally nothing and yet is one of the greatest tools in your arsenal to feeling and looking good!
